Shawn Simmons joined the Office of Academic Diversity and Inclusion as a Graduate Assistant for the Building Better Brothers (B3) program in September of 2012. He transitioned into coordinating UTOP and B3 in November 2013 and was appointed to as the Assistant Director in June 2015.
Simmons is a proud native of Charlotte, NC. He began his undergraduate studies at North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University before moving on to Winston-Salem State University, where he graduated with a BIS in Mass Communications in May 2012. He completed his Master’s Degree in Liberal Studies, concentration in Technical Communication in May 2015 at UNC Charlotte.
He is a member of the Charlotte (NC) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated. He currently serves as the alumni chapter’s Community Service co-chair and on the advisory team of the Zeta Delta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi at UNC Charlotte. He is a member of the West Charlotte High School National Alumni Association; currently serving as the Vice-President and chair of the Membership and Fundraising committees. Since 2013, he has provided support and established a partnership through B3 with the Young Black Male Leadership Alliance. From 2001-2010, he volunteered or worked as an advisor or counselor for various youth programs through the Charlotte Coalition for Social Justice whose services were aimed towards high school aged youth to obtain knowledge of social issues in their communities and provide tools to implement change. He also served as the Assistant Director of Bands at West Charlotte High School from 2006-2009.
